Petition Action

Require Student Letting Agents to charge half rent to those who vacate early.

Petition Details

Students who have had to vacate their student houses early and move home as Universities close due to COVID 19 are still having to pay full rent, despite many losing their income as businesses close. We ask that students are only required to pay half rent for the remainder of this academic year.

Additional Information

Many students work alongside their degree to make up their loans in order to pay their rent. Students are still being required by Student Letting Agents to pay the full rent amount for the remainder of the tenancy this academic year despite most students moving home to stay with their families during the outbreak. We ask that students who fully vacate their student accommodation are only required to pay half rent for the remainder of the tenancy this academic year.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.
