Petition Action

Extend the UCAS deadline for Oxbridge and Medicine applications due to COVID-19

Petition Details

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, it has become increasingly difficult for current year 12 students, who are hoping to apply for Medicine or to Oxbridge, to find work experience or supporting evidence for their personal statements which are crucial for their applications to University.

Additional Information

With the uncertainty of when the current lockdown will cease, hopeful Oxbridge and medicine students may be put at a disadvantage to other students applying for other courses. An extension in the deadline would help them to gain valuable work experience, such as the work experience in hospital related environments, which have been cancelled due to COVID-19, which are necessary for a successful Medicine application.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about university teaching, assessments and exams are a matter for individual universities, and decisions about university admissions are a matter for individual universities and UCAS, not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you have concerns about admissions you should raise these with UCAS, and if you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
