Petition Action

CANCEL rent payments for uni students who live in accommodation during term time

Petition Details

As we all know, we’re in a terrible state at the moment due to Covid-19 and many Uni students who would otherwise be living on campus, or in their respective student homes, including myself, have been forced to return to our family homes, with no more face to face sessions being provided at uni.

Additional Information

The next rent payment will be due mid April and it would be totally unfair to even request a rent payment from us, as many of us aren’t occupying the residence due to unforeseeable circumstances and of no fault of our own. And for those who are still in halls etc, the extra income from not having to pay the April rent could really benefit them during these very uncertain times, as they are without the emotional as well as the financial support of family.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people.
