Petition Action

Suspend interest on student loans

Petition Details

Students are currently accruing interest on their already high level of debt at 5.4% pa. This is despite having their third trimester cancelled and the Bank of England slashing the base rate due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Additional Information

Student debt is already at record levels and the interest being added to it is excessive and unfair. The rate charged of 5.4% is significantly higher than other loan rates e.g. mortgage rates can be fixed at just over 2% and interest on personal loans can be less than 3%. Students are already undergoing hardships due to the Coronavirus with their final terms cancelled and the knock on consequences of this.
