Release Students Affected By Covid-19 From Their Tenancies Early With No Penalty

Petition Details

Student landlords must offer a no penalty release from tenancy contracts for students financially affected by COVID-19. All Universities have now closed their campuses. University halls have given tenants the option to end contracts early. There are no replacement student tenants at this time.

Additional Information

Holding multiple viewings in a global health crisis clearly breaches the PM's message of unnecessary contact and social distancing. It is quite apparent that as Universities have closed their onsite facilities, there would be no "replacement students" to obtain. Landlords have been granted a three month mortgage holiday, so they have been protected from losses in this outbreak. Students have had their part time jobs cancelled. It should be implemented immediately after the mandatory Lockdown.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.
