Petition Action

Cancel student rent payments in line with mortgage holidays during Covid-19

Petition Details

Many students have had to return home due to COVID-19 yet are still required to pay for a term’s accommodation. Thousands of student homes are now empty but landlords refuse to offer any parity between the leeway they have been offered (3 month mortgage holiday) and the leeway we too deserve.

Additional Information

During these exceptional times, the government has enacted exceptional policies which prevent eviction for renters and provides landlords with a mortgage holiday.
For many students, we pay to live in close proximity to our university but these have now been closed. We demand that you take this out of the hands of landlords who refuse to hear our demands and address this oversight which affects one of the most financially vulnerable groups in our society - students.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Suspending payments or providing refunds for tuition fees and rent are a matter for individual universities and landlords, and not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want the Government to refund university rent and tuition fees due to coronavirus, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

If you want the Government to encourage lenders, landlords and utilities to freeze payments during lockdown, you may wish to sign this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302256

If you have concerns about your university's arrangements for teaching and assessment you should raise these with your university or the Office for Students, which regulates the higher education sector.

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people.
