Petition Action

Introduce a rent freeze for zero-hours workers in the hospitality industry

Petition Details

3.2 million people employed in hospitality are at risk. Introduce a rent freeze for all zero hours workers. Universal Credit (UC) is too impractical(1), and those in the food industry need guaranteed financial security, for the health and economy of our country(2). Landlords have mortgage freezes.

Additional Information

(1) UC won't cover our living costs (e.g. my rent is £450 per month, my UC eligibility is £383.20). Due to lockdown, we can't "downsize" our accommodation. The spike in demand from jobseekers outweighs supply of jobs. Lack of savings to fall back on due to low income.
(2) Food supply/delivery underpins the UK's survival. If zero hours workers take time off, they risk losing "informally contracted" hours on return. Rent freeze provides basic financial safety so they can take time off if needed.
