Award the George Cross to the NHS.
The Cabinet Office can give this honour and, therefore, I and, hopefully in due course, many others feel that this would be an appropriate reward from the state in recognising the entire effort made by the NHS during this period of national emergency.
There is clear precedent for making such a collective award. In 1942, the island of Malta and its people were awarded the George Cross for the fortitude of the population under sustained enemy air raids and a navel blockade. In 1999, the RUC was also a collective recipient as the main target of terrorist attracts and for protecting both sides of the Northern Irish community.
Indeed, the citation for any recipient is stated as, 'for acts of the greatest heroism or for the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger'.
