Let's make 'Hobbit' a word in the OED
As part of the nation's culture, and to recognise J.R.R. Tolkien's lasting literary contribution to the nation, it would be helpful if the proper noun 'Hobbit' were officially adopted into the English canon, in addition to it being recognised colloquially. I would argue that Tolkien created it as an Englishman, and that it has now become globally so pervasive as to be admitted as a word in the official English lexicon. To back this up: I suspect many more people on the planet know what a Hobbit is, than know what a lexicographer does.
