Petition Action

After COVID-19 lockdown, seek the closest possible relationship with the EU.

Petition Details

In the interests of returning the economy back to normality, after COVID-19 lockdown, the government should postpone or abandon any potentially disruptive economic experiments and provide certainty and stability. With this is mind, our relationship with the EU should be as close as possible.

Additional Information

The coming months and years after the COVID-19 crisis are going to economically challenging for the entire planet including the UK. It is not in the interests of the British economy and society for the government to be engaged in antagonistic negotiations with our closest and most established trading partners. The government should recognise this new reality, and seek as close as possible a relationship with the EU. Whether this be EFTA membership or even re-admission in the EU.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We understand that you want the Government to secure a close future relationship with the EU, but we can only accept petitions that make a clear request for the Government to take a specific action, and it is not clear what closest possible relationship.

We have published a petition calling on the Government to rejoin the EU under Article 49 TEU, which you might like to sign: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300297

You could also start a petition calling on the Government to seek membership of EFTA, or some other relationship, provided it is clear what relationship you are asking the Government to seek.
