Petition Action

Make the Church and State completely independent of one another

Petition Details

Secularise the State, and remove any other ways in which certain religions are given preferential treatment by Parliament. This should include removing the Lord’s Spiritual, and requirement for daily worship in schools.

Additional Information

A true democracy does not favour or act preferentially towards certain groups. The Lord’s Spiritual means that 26 bishops get to sit in the House of Lords. In state-run schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, there is a requirement for a daily act of worship that is "wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character". It is not democratic for the State to be promoting or favouring a religion. This petition advocates for a neutral State.
