Petition Action

Ask the Queen to award the NHS The George Cross.

Petition Details

I would like HM Government to ask Parliament to petition HM The Queen and ask her to award the NHS The George Cross. After the worst of the virus is past, this could take place at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace or service at St Paul's Cathedral.

Additional Information

The whole island of Malta was given the George Cross in WW2 for bravery and courage - the same should be done for the NHS. The extraordinary bravery and courage in the face of this terrible virus has saved thousands of lives. HM The Queen's father, King George VI, gave the honour to the whole Island and it is on their national flag. The George Cross could become part of the NHS logo so that all doctors, nurses and auxiliary staff could wear it on their uniforms in memory of their heroism at this time.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We cannot accept petitions that call for specific awards or honours, such as the George Cross, to be given to individuals or organisations, because we can only accept petitions about matters for which the Government or Parliament are responsible for.

There is an independent process for considering nominations for awards and honours, including the George Cross, and advising the Queen on granting these, so it is not something the Government or Parliament can do.
