Petition Action

Award the George Cross to the National Health Service.

Petition Details

NHS staff are in the front line, defending the people of the UK from the deadly onslaught of COVID-19, risking their lives in order to treat patients afflicted with this disease. This selfless bravery should be recognised by the awarding of the George Cross to the National Health Service.

Additional Information

The George Cross is the highest British award for civilian bravery. The staff of the NHS are risking their lives for the Common Good and this should be recognised by this award.
The island of Malta was awarded the George Cross for the bravery of it's people in resisting the fascist attacks during the Second World War. The NHS is leading the defence of the people of the United Kingdom against COVID-19.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We cannot accept petitions that call for specific awards or honours, such as the George Cross, to be given to individuals or organisations, because we can only accept petitions about matters for which the Government or Parliament are responsible for.

There is an independent process for considering nominations for awards and honours, including the George Cross, and advising the Queen on granting these, so it is not something the Government or Parliament can do.
