Ban the sale and use of sky lanterns in England
Sky lanterns have become popular over the past few years with people buying them to create light displays in the sky. This involves starting a small fire in a paper lantern, which is then sent into the sky like a miniature hot air balloon. They are however hazardous to humans, pets and wildlife:
They can start fires
They can cause burns
They can cause injury/death to animals and birds that get tangled or ingest small parts
They become permanent litter where they land
They increase the burden on fire, medical and animal welfare services
They have been banned to use on council land in Wales since 2018.
There should be a ban on both selling and using sky lanterns in England to prevent unnecessary fires, deaths and injuries to humans animals and birds.
