Petition Action

State Honours for those who sacrificed their lives to COVID in the line of duty

Petition Details

The COVID-19 crisis in the country is now a proxy war with an invisible enemy. We request a new protocol to be set up to honour and show the nation's respect to those who died performing their duty to save the lives of COVID-19 patients. The protocol must include state honours.

Additional Information

Several NHS and other key workers have sacrificed their lives during the performance of their duties. They knew the potential consequences and risks and yet willingly came forward to save others’ lives. Those who ultimately paid the price trying to save the lives of their fellow citizens must be given state honours similar to what a soldier would get if he/she died on the battlefield. They deserve this token gesture for the herculean task. The protocol could be named the Hercules Protocol

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We cannot accept petitions that call for specific awards or honours, such as the George Cross, to be given to individuals or organisations, because we can only accept petitions about matters for which the Government or Parliament are responsible for.

There is an independent process for considering nominations for awards and honours, and advising the Queen on granting these, so it is not something the Government or Parliament can do.

The Government has announced that it is delaying Her Majesty The Queen’s Birthday honours list until the Autumn so people who have made a contribution to the fight against coronavirus can be recognised and celebrated: www.gov.uk/government/speeches/oliver-dowdens-statement-on-coronavirus-covid-19-20-may-2020
