Give key workers coming off maternity furlough or PAID extended maternity leave.
Keyworkers on maternity leave have been overlooked, currently if you are due to come back to a public funded workplace after the paid 9 months you have to either take unpaid leave to take care of your baby or use holidays. I’d like to see maternity leave and pay extended or furloughed.
As a key worker during the pandemic if I go back to work I’m unable to get any childcare, I can’t send my baby to family because of the risk. Im currently stuck in a situation where I don’t have a choice, if I don’t go back we won’t have money to live on, if I do my baby doesn’t have any childcare. This leaves people with only one option and that’s to take unpaid maternity or leave to take care of the child. If you aren’t in a public funded company you get furloughed for childcare, I’d like to see the same for public funded company’s.

Because of the above petition, the Petitions Committee conducted an inquiry into the impact of Covid-19 on maternity leave, including the specific circumstances for those who work for the public sector. It has published a report and made recommendations to the Government.
