Reclaim taxes avoided by regulatory bodies by becoming charities
Given the current economic crisis, the government should review the charitable status of bodies which have avoided taxes. The regulatory bodies for professions allied to medicine have avoided paying VAT and other taxes by becoming charities. However, their charitable status should be reviewed.
The annual fee is mandatory, not voluntary. It is commonly a flat rate hitting lower paid juniors harder. If you are subject to proceedings the prosecution has access to a huge pool of money drawn from such funds. The accused does not. If the defence body refuses to cover the accused has to fund their own defence. If found guilty then the accused faces huge poverty especially in high profile cases where there has been a miscarriage of justice.perjury or framing. Charities must not cause poverty.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The Government sets the framework for which organisations are eligible for charitable status, but these do not preclude charging membership fees or the bringing of legal action.
Decisions about individual organisations is an operational matter for the Charity Commission, and not a decision for the Government or House of Commons.
If you want the Government to change the eligibility criteria for registering as a charity, you could start a petition about this.
