Review how current employment and health and safety rules protect cruise workers
Due to the current pandemic it is clear with the number of crew suicides that a review is urgently needed to help better protect cruise workers. Unfortunately some crew take their own life in normal circumstances, this current crisis has just highlighted the fact and unfortunately increased numbers.
Working onboard can be incredibly challenging, it’s not just travelling and living a luxurious life. For some, it’s working 70+ hours per week, rarely seeing daylight, earning a minimum salary which is all sent back home, not stepping foot on land for an entire contract (approx 6-8 months). The Government should conduct a review to identify how the law can better protect those struggling through their contracts and save any more innocent lives being taken when they think they can’t go on.
