Implement a four day working week to boost employee productivity

Petition Details

I want the government to consider implementing a four day working week with no loss of wages in order to bring the number of hours worked in line with Germany and Scandinavian countries in order to promote a better work life balance and improve employee productivity.

Additional Information

UK workers dedicate on average 42.5 hours per week to their employer despite their productivity being one of the lowest in Europe behind Italy. Scandinavian countries work 32 hours per week on average and their employee productivity and work life balance is higher than the UK - why is it that we have not followed suit or investigated this further?

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.

We think this petition is similar:
Reduce the maximum working hours to 30 hours per week after Covid-19 lockdown

UK law places limits on the total amount of time someone can work during a week and the minimum amount they can be paid an hour, but it doesn't specify how many or which days of the week they have to work. This would be a decision for employers.
