Glasgow City Council to rename all streets in Glasgow that glorify slavery

Petition Details

Glasgow needs to publicly account for their shameful participation and profit from the slave trade. By keeping the existing street names such as Buchanan, Virginia etc. we are collectively continuing to honour our deplorable history.

Additional Information

Pressure needs to be applied to the appellate authorities to ensure that the sins of the past are put right in the present. In this day and age it is unacceptable to ignore something as profoundly problematic as this. Many are aware of this, council figures have even publicly commented on the issues’ condemnable nature. However, no tangible action has been taken. It is time to change.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about individual historical monuments, statues, plaques and street names are a matter for the local authority in which they are located and private landowners, not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want to raise concerns about a particular historical monument or statue, or request a new monument or statue be erected, you should contact your local authority about this.

The Local Government Association has published an advice note to help councils work to ensure all sections of the community feel heard by decision-makers and each other: www.local.gov.uk/topics/community-safety/statues

We have published the following petitions, which you might like to sign:
