Commission a memorial to the victims of the slave trade
A memorial is long overdue. There are memorials to people who died in wars; a holocaust memorial; a memorial to animals who died in wars. This is all good, but there needs to be a permanent memorial to victims of the slave trade. Britain, like other nations, made a fortune from the slave trade.
A charity fund was previously set up to raise money for a monument, but there were not enough donations. A memorial had planning permission to be erected in Hyde Park, there was even a design, but there was not enough money.
There are many such memorials around the world. In the U.S., the Caribbean, Africa and Europe.
We need a major memorial to the victims of the slave trade in our capital city.
