Change the UK's academic year to January start in response to the Covid19 impact
The closure of schools across the country in response to the Covid19 pandemic has been hugely detrimental to children's education and development. Many children will not have had more than a matter of months in their current year before being expected to transition on unless we make changes.
Starting the academic year in January would enable children to return to their current year group initially, undertaking a 'recovery curriculum' focusing on social and emotional wellbeing. They would then benefit from regular transition days, intake meetings and settling in sessions in preparation for January. This is particularly crucial for children beginning school or moving up Key Stages.
Exams would take place in autumn rather than summer and school leavers events would again be possible.
