We demand Sadiq Khan take down the Sphinx monuments and cleopatras needle

Petition Details

We demand that Sadiq Khan removes the Sphinx at Cleopatra's Needle London. The 2 bronze replicas of Egyptian sphinxes sit on either side of Cleopatra's Needle as it is offensive to the Jewish community We urge the British Government to remove them as this reminds us of OUR Jewish slavery in Egypt.

Additional Information

Sadiq Khan has assured the British black community that all offensive monuments and statues of British slave owners or objects connected to the slave trade will be removed We urge the British Government to remove them as this reminds us of OUR Jewish slavery in Egypt.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about individual historical monuments, statues, plaques and street names are a matter for the local authority in which they are located and private landowners, not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want to raise concerns about a particular historical monument or statue you should contact your local authority about this.

The Local Government Association has published an advice note to help councils work to ensure all sections of the community feel heard by decision-makers and each other: www.local.gov.uk/topics/community-safety/statues

We have published the following petitions, which you might like to sign:
