Take down the statues of known slave traders around the UK
We would like the government to tear down the statues of known slave traders as they represent an upsetting time in History for Black British people and their statues is a way of glorifying the horrible acts they committed
We would like the government to do this because though times have changed and more equality has been achieved the statues of those people represent a disgusting time in history that was unlawful and horrendous. Though they may have been erected for other reasons those people were still slave traders and for that reason they should not be standing. The U.K. is now a diverse place but injustice still exists for some minority groups. The tearing down of these statues is a great start to change.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Decisions about individual historical monuments, statues, plaques and street names are a matter for the local authority in which they are located and private landowners, not the UK Government or Parliament.
If you want to raise concerns about a particular historical monument or statue you should contact your local authority about this.
The Local Government Association has published an advice note to help councils work to ensure all sections of the community feel heard by decision-makers and each other: www.local.gov.uk/topics/community-safety/statues
We have published the following petitions, which you might like to sign:
