Petition Action

Remove statues of all racist figures from public platforms.

Petition Details

The statue of Edward Colston was removed from its pedestal, it’s time all other racist figures are removed from theirs. There is no need for these figures to be towering over society any longer. They do not serve as educational- if education is the intent they should be moved to a museum.

Additional Information

Remove and replace these statues with inspirational figures who have fought for equality and/ or demanded radical change. Philis Wheatley, Mary Seacole, Bernie Grant, and Olaudah Equiano are just a few black people who have radically changed Britain’s social dynamic. They are great candidates to replace that of racist white men, and they will serve to educate the British population on its racist, colonising past, while also showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about individual historical monuments, statues, plaques and street names are a matter for the local authority in which they are located and private landowners, not the UK Government or Parliament.

If you want to raise concerns about a particular historical monument or statue or request a new monument or statue you should contact your local authority about this.

The Local Government Association has published an advice note to help councils work to ensure all sections of the community feel heard by decision-makers and each other: www.local.gov.uk/topics/community-safety/statues
