Create a Legacy of Slavery Commission, to review all UK civic memorials
Establish a Legacy of Slavery Commission, to review civic memorials, including (but not exclusive to) street names, statues and building names, for their links to the slave trade. The commission would determine their social value and recommend removal or replacement.
This commission would ensure that sensible discussion could take place regarding the removal and replacement of memorials that are no longer considered appropriate.
Although a great many of the memorials honour philanthropy, these charitable acts do not absolve the individuals of their heinous links to the slave trade.
This would also serve as a national mandate, to ensure equal and fair discussions take place, and remove the burden from local authorities.
