Do Not Scrap the Gender Recognition Act, Allowing Self-Idenfitication
The government has spent the past two years on a public consultation about the rights of trans people to self-identify and when they didn't get the results they wanted, they said the results were 'skewed'. Allowing trans people to self-identify will save lives and it essential this is passed.
According to Stonewall: "More than one in four (27 per cent) trans young people have attempted to commit suicide and nine in ten (89 per cent) have thought about it."Trans people are some fo the most discriminated against in our society. This Act is giving people the basic human right to identify who they are and have that recognised by the state. Attempt to "placate" the lGBTQ+ community through other means is incredibly offensive and shows this government's contempt for trans lives.
