Don't abolish the Department for International Development.
The UK government has announced it's intention to abolish the Department for International Development, merging it's activities into the Foreign Office. This should not happen.
This move would:
- Deprive DfID of a voice in cabinet
- Remove autonomy from DfID
- Reshape UK aid spending priorities, resulting in the politicisation of foreign aid spending
- Open the door for cuts in foreign aid spending
At a time when COVID-19 threatens to push global extreme poverty up to over 1billion, Boris Johnson’s government’s move to de-prioritise aid spending fails billions of people around the world.
