Remove reference to "Empire" from CBE, OBE, MBE and BEM honours
I would like the government to remove the term "Order of the British Empire" and British Empire Medal from honours. These awards are meant to celebrate outstanding achievements and Empire refers to Britain's colonial and slavery past which has no place in an inclusive and diverse Britain.
Those who receive honours should not have to debate whether to accept them because of the links with empire, colonisation and slavery.
The name change was debated and decided against 15 years ago but it is now time for this to be changed to reflect the equality we want in Britain.
