Protect food standards post-Brexit and reject poor quality US imports
The government must make policy that ensures goods imported under a new trade agreement are produced to as high standards of animal welfare, environmental protection, hygiene and plant health, as are currently applied under UK law. These commitments must be enshrined in new legislation post-Brexit.
Trade deals currently being negotiated with the US and other countries could see our high standards torn up – government must uphold these hard-won protections.
Farmers, environmentalists and consumer groups are pressing the government to honour its manifesto pledge not to undermine food standards with low-quality imports in a post-Brexit trade policy.
Food with lower standards like chlorinated chicken and hormone-treated beef could soon be imported into the UK unless we act now to stop it.
