Petition Action

Allow all prisoners in the UK the right to vote during elections

Petition Details

The UK is currently in breach of Article 3 of protocol No. 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights by not allowing prisoners to vote in elections. This infringement on human rights is unacceptable and the Government should change legislation to ensure all prisoners can vote during elections.

Additional Information

Political parties include key points regarding prisons (recruiting officers and increasing education opportunities) in their manifestos during election time. Seeing as these key points directly impact prisoners, they should be able to have their say on these issues, yet they are still not being included in the democratic process.

There are many other countries which allow prisoners to vote such as Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and Switzerland - yet we do not.
