Petition Action

Allow 2 birthing partners and a companion to appointments and wards

Petition Details

Pregnancy is a scary time and women have to travel this alone. Now more public places have been opened, pregnancy protocol should return to its former state. Partners should be able to attend scans, women should have 2 birthing partners. Fathers should be allowed into wards after birth.

Additional Information

Women need support throughout their pregnancy.
This is an incredibly daunting experience for women to go through to then be isolated immediately afterwards and can have detrimental impact on both their mental health and their ability to bond with their new baby, in particular for first time parents.
There is a potential of receiving devastating news at any given time and it is unfair for women to have to experience this without a loved one.
Most expectant mothers live with their birthing partner/s or are socialising with them so they should not be being penalised when it comes to the life changing experience of giving birth.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Decisions about who can attend scans and other pregnancy appointments are a matter for the NHS, not the UK Government or House of Commons.

On 5 June, the NHS’s suspension of hospital visiting was lifted. This means that visiting is now subject to local discretion by trusts and other NHS bodies. You should check with your maternity team and sonography unit for their policy on visitors attending antenatal appointments, including scans.
