Oppose to the transformation of Hagia Sophia into a mosque.
Oppose to the transformation of Hagia Sophia into a mosque as it’s the responsibility of all to protect western heritage and support UNESCO to protect the status of the monument as a museum open to all.
Hagia Sophia is a masterpiece and unique testimony to interactions between Europe and Asia over the centuries. Its status as a museum reflects the universal nature of its heritage, and makes it a powerful symbol for dialogue. It is a sad reflection that a monument of such global importance and value should become a political tool. It is the Goverment’s and Parliaments obligation to protect the Global cultural heritage and at least oppose to that provocation against the western civilisation.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
Since you started your petition, the Government has confirmed that it expects that Hagia Sophia "remains accessible to all, as testament to its global cultural and religious significance and Turkey's rich and diverse historical and cultural legacy".
This was part of a longer answer provided by Baroness Sugg, Minister for the Middle East and Africa, to a written question submitted in the House of Lords by Lord Alton of Liverpool on 28 July.
You can read Lord Alton's question about Hagia Sophia, and Baroness Sugg's full response on behalf of the Government, here: questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-questions/detail/2020-07-28/hl7421.
It is therefore not clear what else you would like the Government to do.
