Improving child protection legislation
We ask the Government to improve Child Protection Legislation for the benefit of all children and families.
There were 10,199 care applications last year according to statistics from Cafcass (which is accountable to the Department of Education). Every effort must be made to ensure that each decision to separate a child from its family is right.
We ask the Government to implement the following measures:
1. Child protection decisions to be made using evidence based on fact
2. Parents to be informed of the case against them
3. Experts providing evidence to meet the families before finalising their opinion
These measures will reduce the number of children wrongly removed from their families, freeing up Local Authority resources for the most vulnerable children.
