Rethink new obesity measures; consider destructive effect on vulnerable people
revise new guidelines and efforts to encourage weight loss, re-evaluate the effects of displaying calories publicly, and take into consideration the extremely damaging effects of these new proposed policies
Displaying calories on menu’s and encouraging calorie counting behaviours will be incredibly harmful towards those suffering with eating disorders, and will create further stigma around weight. The ‘banning’ of adverts showing ‘unhealthy’ foods before 9pm, doesn’t support a balanced diet, and also projects this onto the younger audience. Through quarantine, those vulnerable to eating disorders have struggled considerably more, UK charity: BEAT, has seen a 72% increase in demand for support.
