Swap the policy of putting calories on menus for a less detrimental alternative
Don’t put calories on menus in restaurants as this is a strategy that the 1.2 million people In the U.K. with eating disorders can’t opt-out of. Instead use QR codes on menus that can be scanned with a phone or create a mobile app with calorie counts that the restaurants have to be signed up for.
An opt-in strategy like an app will be a much safer alternative - this gives people who need to count calories the opportunity to easily access the information they need without damaging those who have suffered from, or are predisposed to suffering from, an eating disorder.
Calorie restriction doesn’t work; 90% of restricted diets fail. It would be more productive for the government to invest in the promotion of exercise and healthy, balanced eating as a means of achieving a healthy weight.
