Remove the term 'BAME' and refer to ethnic groups appropriately & specifically.
The government, it's bodies, the media and wider society should refer to ethnic groups specifically, eg. "Black" and/or "Caribbean/African" "South Asian" "Arab" "East Asian" "Latinx", etc.
The term BAME (Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority) is widely used to refer to all non-white people/communities in Britain.
The call to remove and stop using this term comes from the notion that ethnic minorities should not all be grouped together just because they're not white, as within this 'BAME' umbrella we all have completely different experiences.
For ethnic minorities to be 'othered' in a society that is claiming to be progressive and inclusive is neglectful and disrespectful.
You can't sign this petition because it was rejected. But you can still comment on it here at Repetition.me!
The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:
The Government is not responsible for determining how ethnic minorities are referred to.
The Government's guidance on writing about ethnicity already states that it does not use BAME or BME for a number of reasons: www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/style-guide/writing-about-ethnicity
