Petition Action

Habitat Protection

Petition Details

Three months before the proposed 1981 Wild Life and Countryside Bill went into parliament with Species Protection, the part containing Habitat Protection was taken out.

We need the government to add, Habitat Protection, to the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act

Additional Information

Through lack of Habitat Protection in the 1981 Act, some species, have lost, 90% of their population.

92% of Britain's wildlife has no Habitat Protection.

46%, of the Sites of Scientific Interest, have not been checked in the past 5 years.

G.B. has some 70,000 different species, 7000 of these, are in serious trouble.

A licence is required to hold a Bat or a Snake, but are you free, to chop down all the trees where a Bat feeds and breeds or burn all the grass, which the Snake calls home.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There are already legal protections for animal habitats, including as a result of the Wildlife an Countryside Act 1981, and subsequent regulations.

For example, you can read the Government's guidance on protecting or bats here: www.gov.uk/guidance/bats-protection-surveys-and-licences

And you can read the Government's guidance about protections of reptiles here: www.gov.uk/guidance/reptiles-protection-surveys-and-licences

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to change the current protections for animal habitats, but it would need to be clear what changes you wanted the Government to make to current protections.
