Packaging Tax to Reduce Litter

Additional Information

Introduce a Compulsary Food and Drinks Container Tax to raise revenue whilst keeping our streets and the countryside litter free.

This tax could be partly refunded to the person returning the item to the vendor or collected and returned by others.

A unique barcode could be printed on each item to identify the item and the vendor to prevent duplicate refunds

An amount of say 10p per item could be added, 5p refund for the purchasor or returnee to reclaim, 3p for the government and 2p to the vendor to cover handling costs. The food manufacturers will also gain from recycling of raw materials.

The added benefit of this scheme will be a cleaner environment as not so many Fast Food or Drinks Containers would be discarded.

A similar system was operated in the 1950's and 1960's when I grew up.

Germany and other countries have introduced similar schemes.
