High suicide rate amongst Indian farmers
In the past 15 years, more than 250,000 farmers have committed suicide in India mainly due to financial pressures, according to the Indian National Crime Records Bureau statistics. Approximately one farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes.
We call upon H.M. Government to urge the Government of India to:-
a) create new emergency relief funds for Indian farmers that are easily accessible and not means tested
b) set up a parliamentary commission in India to investigate the causes and propose long term solutions
c) introduce new programmes to raise awareness of the problems facing Indian farmers and provide mental health support in local communities to eliminate the stigma of financial debt and give practical advice to farmers and their families
d) develop new agricultural policies for farmers to produce a viable agricultural sector in India
We furthermore, urge H.M. Government to provide financial assistance to Indian farmers.
