Protect Housing, Council Tax & Living Benefits of Young People Who Need to Live Independently
We the undersigned are very concerned by government threats to cut housing, council tax & any other benefits for young people under 25, forcing them to live in their parental home. Some young people have no parents. Many would not be safe in parental homes, including many of the 1 in 4 females and at least 1 in 6 males sexually abused as children.
Government must ensure that any young person willing to do or be available for reasonable appropriate work, or study, or be in training (or if too physically or mentally impaired to do so) HAS the right to receive benefits to LIVE INDEPENDENTLY & healthily particularly if they:- have been in care; have no suitable safe parent & home; experience parental / family oppression /abuse or neighbourhood harassment; need space for-: self-employment / study / disability access / personal assistance / care staff for physical or mental health impairments / own children; have been living independently already; or threaten family wellbeing.
