Nursing compassion as well as nursing competency
We ask Government to ensure that the NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council) should have a statutory requirement to take into account the compassion and empathy of all registered Nurses and Midwives, as well as their techical and professional competence.
Recent cases have demonstrated that patients can be subject to what amounts to abuse and a lack of compassion, while the NMC only requires a period of retraining, as if compassion can be learned, and is not properly part of the nursing vocation.
We ask the Government to make it a statutory duty of the NMC to monitor all such failures to exhibit care and compassion in Nursing and Midwifery and exclude those found guilty of such failures from the Nursing register.
Nursing can be improved on refresher courses, but a lack of compassion should exclude a person from Nursing. We call upon the Government to ensure that the NMC's duties include the protection of the population from nurses who do not have a required degree of compassion.
