Use supermarkets as an engine of local growth
Would it be possible to create a compromise situation that allows supermarkets to continue expanding AND use them as engines of local growth, for local businesses and service providers?
Yes.
The solution: Create legislation that compels supermarkets to source a specific percentage of their stock & services within a 30 mile radius of the store.
This would:
- Allow supermarkets to continue expanding and creating jobs
- Provide a new platform for local produce, therefore boosting local small business, and helping them to expand and create jobs
- Encourage the creation of local produce, creating more jobs, and therefore boosting the local economy
- Reduce the carbon footprint of supermarkets
- Allow supermarkets to benefit from and assist the growing market trend for "local" and "artisan" food in the UK
- Maintain the local cultural identity of towns and cities
