20 year minimum prison term for metal thieves.
The Attorney General to introduce specific measures to combat metal theft including a 20 year minimum prison term for the theft of items of public infrastructure.
The damage to infrastructure belonging to the UK taxpayer caused by metal theft is totally unacceptable. Whether this is to railways, roads, communications, utilities or community buildings. The consequential loss through delays, cancellations, repairs and additional security measures is grosely disproportionate and totally unacceptable.
Any person detected undertaking theft, attempting to steal or of receiving such goods and items should know that a minimum jail term of 20 years will be their fate.
This should be extended to include special cases such as public memorials, churches and other treasured sites.
