Cancel High Speed 2 (HS2)
The government should withdraw its support for the staggeringly expensive Hiigh Speed 2 (HS2) project, which has been shown by independent experts to be unviable, environmentally unsound and immensely damaging to the landscape.
Instead, the government should look at better exploiting and developing the capacity of the existing rail network and examine ways of re-opening the closed Great Central route at a small fraction of the £34 billion cost of HS2.
The emphasis should be on low carbon solutions that are affordable rather than a grandiose and hugely expensive vanity project that is not needed, would generate more CO2 than car or air travel and would benefit only very a few people.
