Do not legislate to give government any power over the press
Despite the many failings of the press, allowing government any control over them is a fundamental building block of corruption. This is not to apologise for the failures of the press, nor to belittle the cost to the victims.
Consider what lengths Tony Blair and Alistair Campbell went to, to persuade parliament that the Iraq war was the correct choice. They used every lever and tool at their disposable to make their case. Imagine how much more pressure they would have brought to bear on the press if they could of?
