Amendment to Section 55(1) of the Marriage Act 1949
Currently Section 55(1) of the Marriage Act 1949 requires a record of marriage to be entered in a register book.
The details entered in the register book are prescribed by regulations, which provide for the details of the father of the bride and groom to be recorded but not the mothers.
It is absolutely incredible that in today’s alleged age of equality, a mother cannot be named on a wedding certificate.
Without a father, the space will simply be left blank.
The requirement to include the father's details is historic.
Ideally the provision should be there to include the mother's name, but for this to happen a change to the present legislation is required.
Please expedite this simple, yet necessary change to a very straightforward piece of law.
