Limit Credit Reference Checks To Only Credit-Related Applications
Credit checks are performed for applications such as to open a savings account, start a mobile phone contract, offer employment, apply for a mortgage, change energy supplier.
It is the request of this petition that the Data Protection Act 1988 and 2003 be revised to limit credit reference activity to be restricted to:
For pre-contract risk assessment:
1. the application is for unsecured credit - ie. loans and credit cards;
2. the service provider holds a valid credit licence, clearly displayed on all their physical and digital material;
3. the applicant is informed of the way unsecured credit relates to the application
4. credit reference checks and identity checks are separated
For credit reference agency data:
1. the data supplier holds a valid credit licence, clearly displayed on all of their physical and digital material;
2. the data relates to only unsecured credit
3. the data supplier provides evidence for how unsecured credit relates to the data
