Full declaration of financial interactions between doctors and drug companies
Bring in a UK version of the Sunshine Act, requiring drug companies to declare all financial interactions between them and doctors
A doctor's prescribing habits can be influenced by receipt of items or services from drug companies, such as gifts and "freebies", free training in plush hotels, providing travel expenses to conferences, or social events hosted by drug company reps. This can have an effect on patient care.
In America, the Sunshine Act requires drug companies to declare all doctors and hospitals they have given any goods or services over the value of $10 (or multiple gifts below $10 each if the total value of all of them is greater than $100).
Interactions between doctors and drug companies can be beneficial, and can lead to new medical advances. It is in everyone's interests that those interactions are transparent, and that patients are able to see them.
A law requiring the declaration of all gifts and services over £10 would help give that transparency.
