Judges and magistrates should be elected positions
All local and regional judges and magistrates should be accountable to the citizens of the country.
The decisions they make and the sentences they impose should be able to be judged by those they are there to protect against a general belief that their decisions have been proportionate to the crimes committed and appropriate to the suffering of the victims.
There have been occasions where judges and magistrates have levied sentences that have been against the public 'sense of proportion' to the crime; these judges continue to make sentencing judgements even when they are seen to be out of step with the common sense feeling of the population. This only serves to reduce the trust of the nation's citizens towards the justice system.
By making these elected positions, held every 2 or 3 years, it would allow the citizens they represent to decide whether each judge and magistrate has maintained the respect, acceptance and agreement of the population locally.
